Real ID: Discovering Who You Really Are

As we launch a brand-new series at Landing Place Church called Real ID, we’re stepping into a powerful conversation about identity—who we really are and who God says we are.
After two incredible weekends—celebrating Easter with thousands walking through our doors and witnessing 81 baptisms just last week—we’ve seen God move in powerful ways. But if you’ve ever experienced a spiritual high, you may also know what often follows: resistance.
One person told me after being baptized, “I’ve had the worst week of my life.” That’s not unusual. In fact, it’s biblical.
The Pattern: Pinnacle Moments and Identity Attacks
When Jesus was baptized, it was a defining moment. The Spirit descended like a dove. Heaven affirmed Him. And what happened next?
The wilderness.
Before Jesus performed a miracle or preached a sermon, the enemy attacked His identity:
“If you are really the Son of God…”
The strategy hasn’t changed. After breakthrough moments, the enemy often whispers doubt. He questions who we are. He tries to steal what God has declared.
That’s why this series matters.
Because identity determines direction.
Why Identity Matters More Than You Think
In our culture, access is tied to identity.
If you don’t have a Real ID-compliant driver’s license, you don’t get on the plane. Your identity must be verified by the right authority to gain access.
The same principle applies spiritually.
If we don’t understand our identity—if we’re living from a false one—we won’t access the life God designed for us.
And the truth is, many of us wrestle with who we really are.
We define ourselves by:
- Our career
- Our relationships
- Our parenting
- Our achievements
None of those things are inherently bad. But they make terrible foundations for identity.
Because what happens when:
- You lose the job?
- The relationship ends?
- The kids move out?
- The success fades?
If your identity is built on something temporary, it will eventually collapse.
Three Truths About Your Real ID
1. Real ID Begins at Creation
Genesis tells us that when God created humanity, He said:
“Let us make human beings in our image.”
Not the mountains.
Not the oceans.
Not your dog.
You.
You were created in the image of God.
That means:
- Your dignity is inherent.
- Your worth is given, not earned.
- Your value is not based on performance.
The world says your value is what you produce.
God says your value is who you reflect.
You are an image-bearer of the Creator.
Before you did anything right—or wrong—you had worth.
2. Real ID Includes a Unique Design
Psalm 139 tells us:
“You knit me together in my mother’s womb.”
That word “knit” is intimate. Detailed. Intentional.
God didn’t mass-produce you.
He handcrafted you.
And yet many of us secretly think:
“I wish I were more like them.”
“I wish I didn’t struggle with this.”
“Maybe God could have done better.”
Comparison is one of the enemy’s favorite tools. Social media amplifies it. We scroll and think everyone else is living better, doing more, achieving greater.
But Isaiah reminds us:
Does the clay argue with the potter?
God didn’t accidentally make you introverted.
He didn’t mistakenly give you that personality.
He didn’t mess up when designing your strengths—or even your struggles.
He already has one of everyone else.
He created you on purpose.
3. Real ID Declares You a Masterpiece
In Ephesians, Paul writes:
“For we are God’s masterpiece.”
The Greek word used here is poema—where we get the word poem. It means a work of art.
When God looks at you, He sees His craftsmanship.
You may see:
- Your failures
- Your insecurities
- Your regrets
But God sees His image.
His design.
His artistry.
Does that masterpiece need redemption? Yes—that’s why Easter matters.
But your value was never tied to your performance.
Your identity is not a goal to achieve.
It is a gift to receive.
Fake IDs vs. Real ID
Many of us are walking through life with spiritual fake IDs.
We don’t really believe:
- We’re made in God’s image.
- We’re uniquely designed.
- We’re His masterpiece.
Instead, we carry labels that God never gave us:
- Failure
- Not enough
- Too much
- Behind
- Unworthy
Or even:
- My job is who I am.
- My relationship defines me.
- My success validates me.
But all of those can disappear in a moment.
What cannot be taken is what God has declared.
A Question to Consider
What label have you been carrying that God never gave you?
This week, I challenge you to write down a truth about your identity. Put it in your phone. On a sticky note. Somewhere visible.
Maybe it’s:
- I am made in God’s image.
- I am uniquely designed.
- I am God’s masterpiece.
And when the enemy whispers, “You’re not enough,” pull out your Real ID and respond:
“Actually, I am—because this is who Jesus says I am.”
Not because of what you’ve done.
But because of what He has declared.
And that identity?
That one is verified by the highest authority in heaven.
