Peace That Passes Understanding: Learning to Breathe Again

There are moments in life when the air feels heavy—when grief, fear, or uncertainty settle on your chest and every breath feels like the work of moving an elephant. You try to pray, but the words don’t come easily. You tell yourself to be strong, but your soul whispers: I’m tired. I just can’t keep going.”

If you’ve ever been there, you’re not alone.

At Landing Place Church, we believe that God meets us right in the middle of our hardest moments. Not when we’ve cleaned up the tears or pulled ourselves together—but right there in the middle of the mess.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
 Philippians 4:6–7 (NIV)

This verse isn’t a command to stop feeling anxious—it’s an invitation to breathe again. To exhale the worry you’ve been holding and inhale His peace.

 When Peace Doesn’t Make Sense

God’s peace often shows up in the most unexpected places. It’s not the absence of storms—it’s His presence in the storm.
It’s that unexplainable calm in the hospital waiting room. It’s that quiet strength when life feels uncertain. It’s that whisper in your spirit that says, “I’m with you. You’re not alone.”

Peace doesn’t always look like easy answers or smooth paths. Sometimes it looks like you, with tears in your eyes, choosing to trust God one more time and to rest in His arms just a little longer.

 Learning to Breathe Again

When you feel like you can’t catch your breath, start small:

  • Pause. Take a deep breath and remember that God is near.

  • Pray. Even a whisper—“Jesus, help me”—is a powerful prayer.

  • Release. You don’t have to carry it all. Hand it over to the One who can.

  • Remember. God has brought you through before, and He will again.

Each breath is a reminder that His Spirit is still working in you—renewing, restoring, and bringing life where it feels heavy.

A Peace That Guards Your Heart

The peace of God doesn’t just comfort us—it guards us. Paul’s words in Philippians paint the picture of a soldier standing watch, protecting what’s sacred. That’s what God’s peace does. It stands guard over your heart when fear tries to creep in. It shields your mind when worry tries to take over.

You may not understand how it works, but you can trust the One who gives it.

 Letting Go and Letting God

True peace often begins where control ends.
It’s in the surrender—the quiet “yes” to God in the middle of uncertainty—that peace begins to bloom.

God isn’t asking you to fix it all. He’s asking you to rest in Him.
So take a deep breath, right now. Breathe in grace. Breathe out fear.

He’s still good.
He’s still near.
And He’s still whispering peace over you—peace that truly passes understanding.

Worship Songs to Soak In His Peace

If you’re walking through a season where peace feels far away, know this: you don’t have to find your way back on your own. God’s peace will meet you right where you are.

Come worship with us this Sunday at Landing Place Church — 8:30 AM, 10:00 AM, and 11:30 AM. After each service we have a team that would love to pray with you in Prayer Central.

Let’s breathe again together, resting in the truth that His peace is more than enough.
